PLACEMAKING MUST MAKE A DIFFERENCE

PLACEMAKING MUST MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Purpose-driven growth, community co-creation and ESG-led mixed-use have become imperatives for placemaking success.

In 2026, placemaking is increasingly defined by projects expected to deliver environmental and social benefits in addition to the meaningful experiences for the community. Everything we’ll place before the people shall make a difference for their well-being, health, identity and sense of belonging. With new technological/digital tools there is chance of enabling more responsive, collaborative, inclusive, adaptable places. That said, mixeduse developments will be transforming into urban spaces that support daily life and economic vitality.

It is an immense opportunity, and a necessity, to act as a strategic partner rather than solely as a service provider. Demand is growing for end-to-end services that span strategic business planning, long-term assets, property and facility management, sustainability and community engagement, leasing and marketing. This is exactly how we at MPC Properties do business every day, as we continue to expand our network of partners.

The industry faces significant challenges from rising development costs and economic uncertainty, both placing pressure on project feasibility. Trust is another critical issue, as communities are more skeptical of everyday sustainability claims.

Northern and Western Europe are likely to remain leaders in sustainable public space, social infrastructure, and participatory planning, while Southern Europe will intensify its focus on ESG standards. Central and Eastern Europe are expected to see faster growth driven by EU funding and urban modernization.

Europe remains a key growth market while the Middle East continues to offer opportunities through large-scale, experience-driven urban developments and destination projects.

The placemaking sector must prioritize community needs in every project to further contribute to the wellbeing of all. Long-term success will be maintained if we turn to purpose driven growth and offer purpose-related ideas. I also entail collaborating closely with communities through co-creation, and openness. By fostering a culture of open information exchange, we can work more effectively toward shared sustainable goals,

“Placemaking must make a difference for people and communities.”
